Claire Cates continues with part 2 of Threads: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. This month's issue will cover The Bad. Most applications in the world today are still not threaded. Why? The answer is simple; it is difficult to write threaded code and; therefore, the development and debug cycles are lengthened.

There are several things that must be considered when writing code that will take advantage of parallelization:

  • The areas of the application that should be threaded and how to thread them
  • Serialization of shared resources
  • That a threaded application is harder to debug

Phil Mason has another SAS tip in Generating amazing graphics from SAS without SAS/Graph. I was at SAS Global Forum in San Antonio a while back, and I remember seeing a demo booth about SAS BI Dashboard. It was showing some amazing looking graphics that I struggled to imagine could be possible using SAS, although it was a SAS product. I asked the Tech Support guy how they were generated and was surprised that they were actually produced as an Adobe Flash object.

Adrian Cockcroft continues his four part series on Headroom Plots Using R.

Dr. Thomas E. Bell continues his series on retirement in Preparing for Your Final Career: Retirement · Social Security. Social Security currently provides retirement benefits to lots of people, including Tom. If you're lucky, Social Security will provide you with significant retirement income too. The primary reason that it might fail to provide you with as much as anticipated: It has promised more than it can provide Baby Boomers. Nevertheless, you need to understand the general provisions of Social Security so you can keep your options open and react to whatever changes are made to it.

Denise Kalm continues to talk about self improvement in Do You Feel Lucky? Every morning (even on Mondays) when you first wake, you have an important choice. In those first moments, as you open your eyes, you choose what kind of day you are going to have, whether you consciously realize it or not. For many, this is a big surprise - a more common approach is to wait for fate to dictate your experience.

Beginning with this issue, the CMG Bulletin will be incorporated into MeasureIT. The incorporated Bulletin will contain all the news about CMG and the CMG regions. The Bulletin was a two or three times a year hardcopy publication containing CMG and regional news. There has been a large overlap with MeasureIT for several years. The Bulletin is not gone, it has just evolved and will continue to serve its purpose in this new electronic version.
