Joint Ohio Valley CMG and Central Ohio Mainframe Users Group conference May 08, 2018

Ohio Valley CMG and Central Ohio Mainframe Users Group are teaming up to deliver you a full day of great mainframe performance content on May 08, 2018. If you’re a CMG member who is not a mainframe professional, stay tuned: we’re planning a fall conference of non-mainframe content.
The primary meeting location will be the IBM campus in Dublin Ohio, with the satellite location being Progressive Insurance in Mayfield Village Ohio. DataKinetics and IBM have sponsored breakfast and lunch, allowing us to reduce our registration cost to $0. Yes, that is a zero. The hassle of filling out an expense report is not a valid excuse for not attending! Moreover, we’re also making the live webcast of the event freely available as well. We hope you’ll join us in one of our two locations in order to get the benefit of networking with your peers, but we understand if you just can’t make it out of the office.

Monte Bauman of IBM will present Monte’s Meanderings, Sandra Carrol from Nationwide will discuss hot topic of that affects us all : Vulnerability scanning and how to be prepared for the Mainframe. DataKinetics’ Larry Strickland will be presenting one of the measurement group’s favorite topics Analytics : Going all the way with analytics, or just going through the motions? DataKinetics will also during lunch tell us about how their products have helped organizations. After lunch we’re very pleased to have Larry Strickland (DataKinetics) on Cleaning up the batch window, and Scott Chapman from Enterprise Performance Strategies will be giving an interesting presentation on Mainframe Performance Metrics and Observations in the Real World.
We’ll close out the day with a roundtable discussion led by COMUG (Central Ohio Mainframe User Group).

Attend this session to hear the latest news from IBM on IBM Z hardware offerings, including servers and technology and speeds and feeds.

10:10 – Sandra Carrol (Nationwide): Vulnerability scanning and how to be prepared for the Mainframe
Vulnerability scans happen. Including on mainframes. In this session you’ll learn what Sandra has learned about mainframe vulnerability scanning and how they can impact the performance, availability, and security of your systems.

11:20 – Larry Strickland (DataKinetics): Going all the way with analytics, or just going through the motions?
There are a lot of companies out there putting enterprise data from their production systems into Splunk for some serious analytics and machine leaning, and more are getting on the band wagon every day. But what’s really being accomplished? Just getting data into Splunk and pressing “Go” isn’t anywhere near enough. If you don’t really understand your own data, you’re not likely to obtain valuable business intelligence out of it. For example, machine learning can result in intelligent anomaly detection, but how do you know that an anomaly wasn’t caused by an intentional event? To get real value from your data, it must first be intelligently matched with business data. This presentation will talk about the superset of data that you really need before you even get started. Also covered will be discussion of toolset components that you’ll need to get out of the starting gate with a reasonable expectation of success.

13:15 – Larry Strickland (DataKinetics): Cleaning up the batch window
Any large IT shop running mainframe systems has challenges in the batch window. As workloads grow, so grows the pressure to complete that batch processing on time. It can be a race against time that you sometimes lose, risking SLA non-compliance, and worse. The IBM Red Book on Batch Modernization is the starting point, and advice from long-time experts in the field can help smooth things in the batch window.
Objectives:
1. Review challenges for today’s batch window processing
2. Review some of the typical mainstream solutions
3. Review some advice from experts in the field.

14:25 – Scott Chapman (Enterprise Performance Strategies): Mainframe Performance Metrics and Observations in the Real World
There is a plethora of z/OS performance metrics available. Some are easily understood and their applicability is well-known. Others are not so obvious. The more difficult question can be “what is a good value for this metric?” For some metrics, there are no “right” or “wrong” values as they are workload-dependent, but it is still interesting to understand the range of values commonly seen. Situations that generate metrics outside the normal range might be worth investigating. In this session, Scott will take a tour through some interesting z/OS performance metrics, both familiar and not-so-familiar. He will provide a sense for what values other customers are seeing for these metrics as well as some modern rules of thumb where applicable.
