Fake News: easier to detect with sentiment analysis

September 18 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

In his talk on “Fake News: easier to detect with sentiment analysis,” Sanjaikanth E. Vadakkethil Somanathan Pillai addresses a critical issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. With over 7 million lives lost globally by May 2024, many have turned to the Internet and social media for information, often encountering false and misleading content. Sanjaikanth presents a cutting-edge system that leverages ensemble learning methods—such as bagging, boosting, stacking, and voting—alongside recurrent neural networks (RNN) to identify fake news.

He delves into how integrating sentiment and emotional analyses enhances the accuracy of these detection systems. By examining the emotional tone and sentiment behind the information, the system can more effectively distinguish between genuine and false content. Sanjaikanth shares compelling results from his research, demonstrating that the inclusion of sentiment and emotional analyses significantly boosts the system’s ability to detect misinformation. This innovative approach not only advances fake news detection but also underscores the importance of combining technical methods with human-like understanding to combat the spread of false information online.
