Title: z/OS WLM – Revisiting Goals Over Time – Peter Enrico – Enterprise Performance Strategies, Inc., Creators of Pivotor®
There are many reasons to “open up” a WLM service definition. Some changes need to be made for Tuning, others for clean-up, and still others because the goals are outdated. An examination needs to be performed for planned environmental changes or changes to business priorities. The point is that there are many reasons to open up the WLM service definition for examination and potential changes. During this presentation, Peter Enrico reviews the different reasons to roll up your sleeves and analyze your WLM service definition. During this presentation, you are sure to learn a lot about a wide variety of areas related to WLM management on z/OS.
The speaker, Peter Enrico, has strong and diverse experience with the IBM zArchitecture platforms, and a solid background in z/OS, Workload Manager, Parallel Sysplex, UNIX System Services, and WebSphere e-business performance. Peter also has extensive experience measuring, analyzing, and tuning z/OS systems, Sysplexes, and subsystems. Peter’s abilities extend beyond just z/OS performance and capacity planning. He is considered a highly qualified and effective communicator and seminar instructor.
Peter is the lead designer and developer for Pivotor®. Pivotor® is a web-based z/OS SMF performance data mining, reporting, and analysis solution for daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly z/OS performance and capacity reporting. Since Pivotor® also includes a subcomponent to extract SMF data, it is a very powerful SMF data reporting and analysis solution.
Peter regularly teaches z/OS performance classes and as a member of Enterprise Performance Strategies, Inc., he works as a performance consultant for companies interested in optimizing their performance z/OS systems. Due to his diverse and unique set of both technical and communication skills, on a regular basis, many customers, vendors, and even IBM, tap Peter’s zArchitecture, z/OS Workload Manager, WebSphere on z/OS, e-business, Parallel Sysplex, and UNIX Systems Services performance knowledge.
Title: Microseconds Matter – Optimizing the Value of Your z Systems Processor with the IBM DS8880 Mark Wells – IBM
Discussing the value of minimizing DASD response times from a lost CPU processing time perspective and how IBM focuses on that aspect through our z and DS8000 co-developed synergy functions. Including current offerings including zHyperwrite, zHyperlink and our use of Flash technology in the current iteration of the DS8880s.
Mark Wells is an Executive IT Specialist working in the United States. As a Client Technical Specialist since 2005, he provides storage solution design, technical consulting, and implementation support to his customers. He has extensive experience on the DS8000 platform in large-scale replication environments. Mark has worked for IBM since 1997 in various roles and has worked in the IBM System z® and Enterprise environments for over 30
years. He is co-author of three IBM Redbook publications
IBM DS8870 Copy Services for IBM z Systems
IBM DS8870 Copy Services for Open Systems
IBM DS8870 Data Migration Techniques

Title: WLM – Deciding Between Velocity Goals and Response Time Goals – Peter Enrico – Enterprise Performance Strategies, Inc., Creators of Pivotor®
WLM Velocity and Response Time goals are the most proper goal types for most workloads in the z/OS environment. Deciding which one to use is typically very straightforward. Long-running work should be assigned velocity goals, and short running work should be assigned response time goals. However, there are other deciding factors. For example, the frequency of transactions, the amount of CPU consumed by the workload, the relative number of using and delay samples, and more. During this back-to-basics presentation Peter Enrico will help you better understand velocity and response time goals, considerations when choosing each, and some measurement and tuning tips as well. This presentation will also touch on the topic of whether or not response time goals should be used for CICS and IMS transactions, or if it’s better to allow the regions to be managed towards velocity goals.

Title: Understanding MLC Cost Impact of Performance and Capacity Management Don Zeunert – BMC
Our old methodologies are obsolete. Managing for best response time or postponing hardware upgrades is not what is driving IT costs. We need to start managing the rolling 4hr MSU MLC costs. Do you know what is driving your MLC costs? You might be surprised at what and how easily you can cut them by 10% without any additional software. This session will discuss common issues and mechanisms available to solve them with PR/SM, WLM and other simple changes, without hurting SLAs.
Thanks, in advance, for your past participation. We hope to see you there.
